FROM TOKYO TO HOKURIKU, A PLUNGE INTO AUTHENTIC JAPAN

By Philippe Guersan

Set off for six days between Tokyo and Hokuriku to discover temples, handicrafts and unspoilt landscapes, for an authentic immersion in traditional Japan.

AFTER TOKYO, DISCOVER THE HOKURIKU REGION BY SHINKANSEN, FOR AN AUTHENTIC TRIP TO ELEGANT, THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD JAPAN.

Day 1: Tokyo, urban harmony and Zen spirit

The journey begins with a stroll through the Koishikawa Korakuen gardens, a haven of peace dating back to 1629. Rolling hills, shimmering ponds and winding paths follow one another, punctuated by bridges inspired by classical China. The reflection of the half-moon bridge on the water evokes a suspended world, while the scent of flowers and birdsong create an atmosphere conducive to meditation and photographic contemplation.

The early afternoon is devoted to the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, a showcase for the Mingei movement. Glazed ceramics, lacquers with deep reflections and meticulously woven textiles tell the story of everyday Japanese craftsmanship, while explaining the philosophy of the «beauty of use» dear to the thinker Yanagi Sōetsu.

Then it's on to the Shinjuku district, where the cosy atmosphere of Book and Bed Tokyo is immediately appealing. This unique concept combines a hostel and a library in a soothingly urban setting. The shelves overflowing with books of all kinds conceal alcoves where you can sleep, read or simply dream, lulled by the rustle of the pages.

In the Shibuya district, the Recoco Café offers a unique musical experience. Each table is equipped with a record player, so you can listen to Japanese city pop or Western classics, perfect for an encounter with Tokyo's urban culture.

For dinner, the Japanese restaurant YUKURI in the Niwa Tokyo hotel offers a refined kaiseki menu: tuna and fresh salmon sashimi, vegetable and seafood tempura, yuzu-flavoured dashi broth, soft rice and matcha dessert. The classic Japanese crockery adds visual subtlety to the taste experience. As for the hotel, it combines contemporary comfort with timeless touches, guaranteeing a good night's sleep as you set off to explore the Hokuriku region.

Day 2: Sado, where gold meets tradition

We leave Tokyo by Shinkansen, the high-speed train line, for Niigata, then take the ferry to the island of Sado. Lunch at Uohide, a famous sushi bar: fatty tuna, sweet prawns and delicately dressed rice, served with freshly grated wasabi and floral sake.

Nicknamed «the island of gold», Sado owes its fame to its mines, exploited intensively from the XVIᵉ century onwards, which attracted merchants and craftsmen and once made the island rich. To the south-west, the small village of Shukunegi stretches over barely a hectare. It was already home to a port in the Middle Ages, and after the heyday of mining became a key centre for maritime trade on the Sea of Japan. Each alleyway and each house illustrates the history of a village intimately linked to gold and the ocean.

As you travel around Sado, don't miss this exceptional temple. In the south of the island, Rengebuji, whose foundation is traditionally attributed to Kukai in the early IXᵉ century, is a holy place of the Shingon school, with its listed pavilions and Kotsudo ossuary. In July, the hydrangea blossom transforms the temple into a showcase of delicate colours, where every alley and wooden house seems frozen in time.

A diversion to the Obata Shuzo brewery, producer of the famous Manotsuru sake, founded in 1892 and winner of several awards, combines an immersive visit with a tasting revealing delicate aromas.

In the evening, embark on a nocturnal kayaking tour, an original experience in which the lights under the kayaks illuminate the fish and seaweed, transforming the shoreline into a living aquarium. After the activity, head to the Sado Udon Aoi restaurant, housed in an old renovated Japanese house, to enjoy a dinner based on Sado noodles: noodles prepared with nagamo, a local seaweed, in a fragrant broth accompanied by small dishes featuring local produce and crispy kakiage... Then head to the Azuma hotel, on the seafront, offering an exceptional view of the calm waters and green hills.

Day 6: Return to Tokyo
